Visas - entry regime

Health
Insurance
Zanzibar, which has been an autonomous part of the United Republic of Tanzania since 1964, has introduced an obligation for all tourists to purchase health risk insurance before embarking on a trip, starting from October 1, 2024, consisting of the mandatory presentation of a printout with a QR code at airport check-in, or before boarding a ferry from mainland Tanzania to Zanzibar, concluded exclusively through the state-owned Zanzibar Insurance Company (ZIC), or its website www.visitzanzibar.go.tz for the entire duration of the planned stay .
The insurance must be purchased by travelers regardless of any other existing insurance they may have; its price is 44 USD and is valid for 92 days . In the event of a longer stay, it must be purchased again. The insurance contract cannot be concluded with any other than the designated state insurance company ZIC. Payment for the insurance is made via the insurance company's website www.visitzanzibar.go.tz and is made by credit card.
The obligation to take out travel insurance before travelling currently only applies to Zanzibar. However, the Tanzanian government is currently considering introducing mandatory travel insurance for all foreign non-residents entering mainland Tanzania.
Mandatory coverage covers medical services, lost luggage, accidents, emergency evacuation, loss of passport and documents, and even repatriation in the event of an unfortunate death.
It is recommended to have classic travel insurance for additional coverage, or possibly registration in the DROZD system .
Vaccination
For a trip to Tanzania is not No mandatory vaccinations, but the following are recommended:

Currency and Money
The Tanzanian currency is the Tanzanian shilling. The Euro and the US dollar are also widely used and accepted in various places, especially in the tourism sector. Most entrance fees to tourist destinations are paid in US dollars, and tourist establishments such as restaurants, lodges, and hotels also accept US dollars.
There are bureaux de change in the cities that change most foreign currencies into Tanzanian shillings. ATMs are available in the cities, but they mostly accept debit cards. Most local banks and bureaux de change do not usually change US dollars that were issued before 2006.
Hotels, restaurants, lodges, campsites, souvenir shops and large gift shops accept credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and Maestro.
Time Difference
Tanzania's time zone is three hours ahead of GMT. Compared to Central European Time, it is plus two hours, compared to summer time plus one hour. Practically, this means that if it is 8 pm here, it is 6 pm in Tanzania, and 7 pm in summer.

Official language
The official languages in Tanzania are English and Swahili .
Tipping
Tipping is not mandatory in the Tanzanian service and tourism sector. However, it is somewhat of a custom and common practice. It is seen as a way of expressing appreciation for the services provided.
Safari driver/guide: 10-20 USD/EUR / person/ day
Staff at campsites and lodges: 2-4 USD/EUR / person / day (usually there is a shared box at the reception)
Restaurant/bar staff: 5-10% of the total bill
Porters (in accommodation facilities, at airports): 1-3 USD/EUR
Chambermaid: 1 USD/EUR / day
1 euro/1 US dollar is approximately 2500 TZS.
The indicated tip amount is only a guideline for tourists, but more/less may be given depending on satisfaction with the services.
Communications and electricity
Electricity, sockets
Type G plug used in England – three flat pins. A travel plug adapter or simple adapter is required, but not a voltage converter.

Telephone
Telephones are widely used in Tanzania, especially mobile phones, which can also be used to call European countries. However, the cost of a call can be very high and is not worth it.
The police, ambulance and fire brigade have a common number of 112.
Internet
Internet services: connections via public and free Wifi networks are available in many cities, hotels, airports, restaurants and cafes.
In safari camps, it is usually only at the reception, and it usually does not reach more distant tents.
Tanzanian SIM card: if you want to save on calls and data within Tanzania, get a Tanzanian SIM card. Prepaid SIM cards can be purchased at the airport kiosk upon arrival in the country, or at official local operator stores and selected smaller shops. To purchase a SIM card, you must present your passport and have your fingerprints or face photo taken.
